gotta keep perspective :)

Olá!!
Well I gotta say, this week has been very interesting!
We started the week off with an awesome street contact. We talked to a lady and she immediately invited us into her house to talk with her. We ended up teaching her a full lesson and getting a return appointment! Such an awesome start to the week!
The next day, we took a bus to a town outside of Viseu to contact a referral. We didn't get to meet with the referral but we met a super awesome lady that said she saw Jesus so that was super cool! After that contact, we went back to the bus stop and waited for a while but the bus never came. So we ended up walking almost two full hours back home on the side of the street. My legs were dead after the long day but it was all worth it bc we got to talk to super cool people and teach about Christ!
Also, we had a goal not to speak any English all day which was a challenge but definitely a learning experience:)

So this is where my email title will start making a little more sense. Thursday morning I woke up with a weird pain in my left side. A couple minutes later I ended up passing a kidney stone. We did basically nothing all day and I ended up passing another kidney stone at 6 am the next morning. If you've never had kidney stones, let's just say it's not super fun. There's lots of throwing up,  nausea, and fun things like that!
The next day, we went to zone conference which was in Coimbra (about an hour and a half on a bus away). Zone conference was great as always but quite painful if I'm being honest. But thanks to help from a Priesthood blessing and several super awesome missionaries, I was able to go and come back without any problems. Let's just say, I know the power of the Priesthood is 100% real!! And so is the power of prayer.
Since then, we've done very little work bc I've been stuck in the house with lots of nausea and sickness. It's not a good feeling at all not being able to work. I never thought I would hate being house ridden so much. I've learned that my perspective is super super important! Just because my body hates me for the time being, doesn't mean the world is ending. I've learned that sometimes we just have to have patience, bear through challenges, and have a bigger perspective. Soon enough, I'll be out working at my 100% best again, it might just take more time than I had hoped.
So yeah, not today Satan!!

Besides that, yesterday we were able to go teach a lesson with a couple members. We taught a lady named Maria. She's a sweetheart but I can hardly understand any of her Portuguese bc her accent is so thick. At the very beginning of the lesson I said a prayer in my head and asked for the gift of tongues because I wanted to understand her so bad. Near the end of the lesson, I started to bear my testimony to her about the power of the Priesthood, but I had a complete loss of words. I just kinda sat there embarrased bc I completely forgot Portuguese suddenly. She smiled and looked at me and said, "it's ok, you can talk to me in English if you'd like." I, being completely shocked to hear English, was like "ok!!" And I was able to get my point across.
It was super funny learning that she can understand English and speak just fine. It took me a little bit by surprise but it made me feel much more relaxed.
In other words, God answers our prayers always. Just not always in the way we think He will.

Sorry for the long email. This week was quite the party over here in Viseu!

Please know that I'm praying for all of you! Keep pushing through lifes challenges and looking at the bright side. Whenever the adversary tries to get you down, just remember:
"Hoje não satanás!" -- "Not today satan!"

Go give someone a hug today:)

Love you all♡

gelato, gelato, and more gelato:)

Olá!!
You can probably guess by the title of my email that we ate even more gelato this week. If I gain weight on my mission, I definitely give all the credit to European gelato bc it's a WEAKNESS I never knew I had. Its absolute heaven!
Lots happened this week but to keep this email relatively short, I'll just give a few details...
We started teaching two women named Palmira. They're just two best friends who have the same name which makes it kinda hard for us to figure out. They're super awesome and they love the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
I got to meet lots of the members of our ward. Irmáo Miguel, a man in our ward loves the missionaries so every time a new missionary comes in he has lots of members and missionaries over for dinner to have panquecas com quejo (pancakes with laughing cow cream cheese). At first I was like, wow cheese and pancakes... what a mixture. But they're actually so good! Its tradition for the new missionary to cut the cow picture off the cream cheese wrapper and tape it to the back of our tag (see the picture below).
We met lots of other members who are amazing. They love to take care of the missionaries and help with the work, such a blessing in our lives.

Never underestimate the power of a smile or a friendly face. Honestly, just a smile can turn someone's day completely around. I know we've all heard it before but it is so so so true. And something I learn every day from the mission is how every single person deserves that same love. It doesn't matter who they are, just be kind. That's what Christ does. (1 John 4:7-12)

I love this work. I love Viseu. I love my trainer. I love Portugal. And I love the Gospel. This really is God's work.

I love you all and I hope you have a great week! Go make someone's day today!

Eu amo vocês

VISEU (means "i saw heaven")

OlÁ!
(Apparently I've been spelling that wrong this whole time, it just took me until Portugal to figure that out Haha-theres an accent over the a)

Welp! I finally made it to Portugal, 14 hours of flight time and 7 hours of layover later:)
In the airport, I ran into two super bom friends from BYU James Mendenhal and Fielding Demars which was the craziest but coolest coincidence!

Now, I'm serving in Viseu which is north of Coimbra. This place no joke looks like it came straight outta Harry Potter. It's like old Europe streets and buildings and parks and churches. Even the street lamps look super cool. I never thought I'd get to legit serve in Diagon Alley.
The day after I arrived in portugal, we got to meet lots of other missionaries and President and Sister Fillmore. They're all muito bom!
Not gonna lie, my Portuguese is pretty bad because of the Visa wait. Well even if I didn't Visa wait, I still wouldn't understand anything anyone is saying because everyone here talks really fast. I can speak mas ou menos but I'm definitely a greenie.
Portugal is seriously a dream. They have adorable little padarias and gelato stores everywhere that are muito adorable and taste so good. America needs more of those Haha!
We had to take a 3 hour bus ride to Viseu on Thursday only to take it back to Lisboa Friday night because Elder Neil A. Anderson of the 12 apostles came to dedicate Portugal's first temple. I got to meet so many missionaries that now my brother when he served here and we got to listen to an apostle speak! Also, I got to see almost all my MTC friends again. We hope everyone will make it to Portugal soon!
I got to meet my dad's college roommate's son who's serving in my mission and also got to see Sister Hogge who I grew up with! Seriously, the past couple days have been so fun!

Getting down to the more serious stuff though, I have never felt more strongly in my life that God puts us where we're supposed to be when we're supposed to be there.
I was supposed to be in Spokane and I loved all the people I served with and got to meet and teach. And now, I know that Portugal (specifically Viseu) is where I'm supposed to be. I know that!
The Lord has a plan even though we may not always understand it in the moment.

If you haven't yet, look up the new Portugal Lisbon Temple that was just dedicated this past Sunday. We got to watch the dedication be broadcast and it was beautiful! Definitely a house of the Lord.
I love you all and I'm praying for you!
Don't take life for granted. When life gets hard, count your many blessings because God is so so so good!

Have a great week and go make someone's day today!

Living on the edge :)

Hey friends and family!
Sorry for another short email p days are insanely busy.
This week was very long but somehow flew by at the same time. We did lots of service and met a lot of super cool people!
There's a good chance I'll be on a plane this time next week so stay tuned cause it's about to get interesting haha:) this whole week is just a whole lot of living on the edge cause who knows what's comin!
I hope all y'all were able to help someone out this week. I've realized on my mission just how many opportunities we miss everyday to lift a burden off of another. Sometimes we're so focused on ourself that we miss those things we can do to shed some light on another. For example, Sister Petersen noticed a woman pulling out of a parking lot in her car but there was a cup of water on top. I had my head down because I was doing something on the phone so I didn't notice one bit. We were able to let her know before she drove away because Sister Petersen was looking up. Yes it's a very small thing, but I learned that sometimes we just need to look up, get out of ourself, get out of our phone, and help someone else out. Look around because there's opportunities to serve everywhere.
I love you all lots!
Go make someone smile today:)
Love,
Sister Tay Cannon
